Why Integrated Science?

Do you have a love for science?

If you love science then Dalhousie's Integrated Science Program may be for you. In this first-year program you take a broader range of science subjects than in a regular BSc program, and you dive deeper into some of the subjects. You'll be part of a small group of keen science students who will work together, learn together and explore connections together, while enjoying a wide range of science-related activities throughout the year.

Some students choose Integrated Science because they want to explore different subjects before deciding what interests them most. Other Integrated Science students want the breadth that the Integrated Science offers, or the first-year research opportunities, or the chance to start their programs with a group of enthusiastic students. If any (or all) of these describe you, Integrated Science might be the right choice for you.

Benefits of the program

The Integrated Science program prepares students to enter any major or combination of majors in the Faculty of Science. You will start your second year with a background in broad range of science subjects, and with lots of hands-on experience, including lab, field, computer and writing skills.

You will also have begun to build a strong set of research skills that will not only help you in your further studies, but also as you start to look for volunteering and summer job opportunities. You will have had experience with designing experiments, data collection and analysis, presentation of scientific results, and perhaps most important, critical thinking.

The emphasis on research and communication skills makes Integrated Science an excellent foundation for students who want to do Honours or Combined Honours programs in any science subject. The focus on finding connections also prepares students well for interdisciplinary fields such as environmental science or ocean sciences.

While the program is challenging, it can also ease the transition from high school to university. Class size is small (maximum 80 students) and you will quickly get to know others in the class as well as your Integrated Science professors. And the program can be the gateway to the broader ºÚÁϳԹÏÍøcommunity, as you form connections with upper year students who took Integrated Science in their first year, and as you meet the research team of the lab where you will conduct your research.Â
