Carbon Capture and Storage

Despite the global push to develop and implement sustainable energy strategies, there is still a huge energy demand that is filled by sources that are high-emitters of the greenhouse gas CO2. One possibility for mitigation (UN 2030 Goal 13) is carbon capture and storage (CCS).Ìý

The capture of emitted CO2 and storage in geological structures has been studied in Nova Scotia. The Atlantic sedimentary basin has potential candidates for CO2 ²õ³Ù´Ç°ù²¹²µ±ð.Ìý

  • Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary basins for CO2 storage have been identified near major sources in the province.Ìý
  • Carbonate and clastic reservoirs have seal pairs
  • Capped by thick shale deposits or evaporite deposits which can form excellent seals
