Congratulations to the ϳԹSolar Car Team, who placed 4th among the 24 teams registered in the Formula Sun Grand Prix in Topeka, KS!
The team also receive the Best New Team Scrutineering award for their preparedness and fast speed at which they passed all 11 stations of inspection.

Congratulations to Tanaka Akiyama, a 4th year undergraduate student in Computer Engineering for being awarded the Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation (CEMF) Undergraduate Ambassador award. The Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation (CEMF) Undergraduate Ambassador award aims to attract women to the engineering profession by offering a scholarship to young women who demonstrate exceptional leadership and are volunteers in their communities. In doing so, the scholarship honours the memory of the 14 women from l’École Polytechnique, whose contributions to Canada ended on December 6, 1989. To support the organization, Tanaka will be giving two presentations to high school level audiences about why she chose to become an engineer, the social responsibility of engineers, and how to become an engineer. |

A group of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) students and professors is a part of ϳԹteam that received $200K from theCanadian Space Agency to develop a tiny cube shaped satellite (CubeSat) destined for and launched into space by NASA (USA) in two years. The project is student-oriented and will provide students with the opportunity and experience in science, engineering design, project management, leadership and communications. The ECE members, comprised of a group of undergraduate and graduate students, will be led by Prof. Zhizhang (David) Chen, head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Dr. Ghada Koleilat, a faculty member of this Department, has won the 2017 Emerging Professional Discovery Award for Science and Technology in Nova Scotia for her work on quantum dot materials for solar cell and photovoltaic applications. The award is sponsored by the Nova Scotia Discovery Center and a number of universities and industrial companies. Congratulations to Ghada! Excellent work!

Professor Jason (Jianjun) Gu has been voted as the IEEE Region 7 Director-Elect (President-Elect IEEE Canada) for 2018-2019. The IEEE Canada is the Canadian arm (as Region 7) of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) as well as the constituent society of the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) for the technical fields of electrical, electronics, and computer engineering. It operates some 21 sections (local organizations) arranged in 3 areas (Western, Central, and Eastern Canada), as well as over 50 student branches in universities and colleges, operates two annual conferences hosted in different cities across Canada, publishes an electronic newsletter, a general interest magazine, and a technical journal, maintains a web site containing publication archives, a digital library of specialized lectures, and a showcase of Canadian engineering achievement (developed as a milennium project), recognizes the individual achievements of its members through an extensive program of awards, promotes student growth and development by providing scholarships and grants through the IEEE Canadian Foundation, provides resources (experience, funding, contacts, and so on) to assist members in upgrading their knowledge base, professional skills and networking capabilities. Dr. Mo El-Hawary will deliver a keynote speech on smart grid intelligent functions for coordinating control solutions in the IEEE 2017 International Conference on Control, Automation and Robotics, to be held in Nagoya, Japan, April 22-24, 2017. Dr. El-Hawary received numerous awards and recognitions and is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the Engineering Institute of Canada.

The 2017 Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research Conference was successfully held on April 11, 2017, thanks to the organization of Dr. Jason Gu and his conference team. Dr. Josh Leon (Dean of Engineering) and Dr. Z. David Chen (Head of the ECE Dept.) gave the opening remarks. Dr. Marlon Lewis, Director of ϳԹOcean Frontier Institute, delivered a keynote presentation entitled “Ocean Technologies: New Opportunities for Nova Scotia”. Nine regular oral presentations by ECED Ph.D. candidates and 10 three-minute short presentations by ECED Master candidates followed. 12 prizes were given to the winners of the presentations judged by the ECE faculty and student panels.

Dr. Sergey Ponomarenko received a 2017 Outstanding Reviewer Recognition from the Optical Society of America (OSA) for 2016. The OSA Outstanding Reviewer recognition is given annually and is meant to commend the top reviewers for their outstanding peer review efforts over the past year. Recipients are chosen by the Editors-in-Chief of OSA's journals from scores of nominations provided by their Topical and Associate Editors.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is very pleased to announce that Dr. Ghada Koleilat has recently joined the Department.
Ghada I. Koleilat received her BASc (2006) in Electrical Engineering from Concordia University, her MASc (2008) and her PhD (2012) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Toronto. During her graduate studies, she developed the world's first functional colloidal quantum dot tandem solar cell employing a single quantum tuned material. She also conceived a material processing that enabled prolonged stability and improved electrical properties in photovoltaic junctions based on colloidal quantum dots. That process is now patented and licensed to InVisage, Inc.
Before joining ϳԹ in August 2016, Koleilat did her postdoctoral training at Stanford University where she investigated the properties of single walled carbon nanotubes and their potential in photovoltaics.
Her work has frequently been highlighted in major media outlets like Nanotechweb, Materials today, National Post, MIT’s Technology Review and Engadget, to name a few. Her first publication (ACS Nano 2008) was one of the 10 highest cited articles in the journal for 4 years.
She has received several presitigious highly competitive awards for her research work, most notably the Banting PDF (2012). She was ranked 3rd among all the engineering and natural science applicants (PDF NSERC applicants).

On July 27, 2016, Dr. Gu was inducted to the Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) for his contribution in robotics area. With Dr. Gu’s fellowship, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering now has three CAE Fellows (the other two are Drs. Mo El-Hawary, Zhizhang (David) Chen).
The Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) is the national institution through which Canada’s most distinguished and experienced engineers provide strategic advice on matters of critical importance to Canada.
The Academy is an independent, self-governing and non-profit organization established in 1987. Fellows of the Academy are nominated and elected by their peers, in view of their distinguished achievements and career-long service to the engineering profession. Fellows of the Academy are committed to ensuring that Canada’s engineering expertise is applied to the benefit of all Canadians.
The Canadian Academy of Engineering works in close cooperation with other senior academies in Canada and internationally. It is a founding member of the Council of Canadian Academies, along with the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. Dr. Jason Gu was awarded the 2016 IEEE Canada J.J. Archambault Eastern Canada Merit Award for exemplary service to IEEE Canada Atlantic Section and Area level.

Dr. Jean-François Bouquet joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in July, 2013. Dr. Bousquet is a graduate of École Polytechnique de Montréal where he completed his B. Eng. in Electrical Engineering in 2001. He later completed his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Calgary in 2007 and 2011 respectively, where he focused on the implementation of low-power integrated circuits applied to wireless communication. In 2010, he received the Analog Devices Outstanding Student IC Designer Award for his work on the reflector amplifier. Between 2009 and 2011, he was employed as a high-speed analog IC designer at Ciena for the development of coherent fibre optics communication networks. Previously, he also worked as a software engineer at Oerlikon Contraves where he developed custom communication protocols on embedded-computers. His research interests include analog and mixed-signal integrated circuit design, digital communications as well as channel characterization and estimation applied to underwater communications. Dr. Michael Cada and his team, through an intensive competition, has been awarded an NSERC CREATE grant of $1.65 million which is entitled “Applied Science in Photonics and Innovative Research in Engineering (ASPIRE)”. The CREATE (Collaborative Research and Training Experience) Program was established by NSERC (Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada) to support the training of teams of highly qualified students and postdoctoral fellows from Canada and abroad through the development of innovative programs that encourage collaborative and integrative approaches. The CREATE program addresses significant scientific challenges associated with Canada's research priorities, including the acquisition of professional skills, and it facilitates the transition of new researchers from trainees to productive employees in the Canadian workforce. The program also supports industrial stream applications and offers opportunity to collaborate with foreign institutions. Congratulations, Michael!

Dr. Larry Hughes was invited to give a presentation to the Standing Committee on Natural Resources of the House of Commons, on Current and Future State of Oil and Gas Pipelines and Refining Capacity in Canada on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012. Dr. Hughes conducts research in energy systems, energy security, and energy policy issues. He has many years of experience in research and publications on energy security and climate change. He was a contributing author to the IIASA Global Energy Assessment Knowledge Module 5 on Energy Security (2009 to 2011), a visiting research scientist with the Global Energy Systems research group at Uppsala University in Uppsala, Sweden (July to December 2009), a Member of Halifax Chamber of Commerce energy security committee (2005 to 2009), a Member of Halifax Regional Municipality's Regional Planning Committee (2002 to 2004), an intervener in NSPI rate increase hearings (2004, 2005, and 2008). He is also a frequent contributor to various media outlets in Canada including the Globe and Mail, the Chronicle Herald, and AllNovaScotia.com. He has been interviewed on television (CBC, CTV, ATV, BNN), CBC radio (Information Morning, Maritime Noon, Mainstreet, and The Current), and local talk radio. Job well done, Larry!

Dr. Christian Schlegel joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in January, 2012. Christian Schlegel received the Dipl. El. Ing. ETH degree from the Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN, respectively. Prior to joining ϳԹ, he held an Alberta Provincial iCORE Chair and a Canada Research Chair at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. His research is in the areas of error control coding and applications, multiple access communications, communications system, wireless networks, as well as analog and digital low-power implementations of digital systems. Dr. Schlegel has received research grants from many public and private sources, and has an active consulting engagement with communications industry in North America. In 1997 he received an NSF CAREER Award to pursue research in multiple access communications. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, and has served as IEEE Distinguished Lecturer, Associate Editor, Conference Chair, and frequent technical program committee member for IEEE conferences. Dr. Zhizhang (David) Chen has been elevated to IEEE Fellow, Effective, 1 January 2010, for contributions to time-domain electromagnetic modeling and simulation. The grade of Fellow recognizes unusual distinction in the profession and is conferred by the Board of Directors upon a person with an extraordinary record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. As it stands today, the total number selected in any one year does not exceed one-tenth of one percent of the total voting Institute membership.IEEE Stands for The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. OTI donates $300,000 ETAP software to the Department: Operation Technology, Inc. generously donated ETAP Power Systems software valued at $300,000 to the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. The software provides us with the opportunity to enhance our current Electrical Power Lab. The ETAP Power Lab package serves as an excellent hands-on learning tool for our electrical engineering students in the understanding and usage of the most popular Enterprise Solution for Electrical Power Systems worldwide.
