Mineral Processing and Materials

Research areas and projects

Our faculty have strong research interests with ongoing projects in underground and surface mining, oil and gas, mining geology, mineral processing, and development of innovative instruments and technologies in these fields.

Many faculty are also involved with interdisciplinary research groups, such as material characterization, structural health monitoring, and Energy at Dalhousie.

Our graduate program is designed to conduct both basic and applied research. Many projects are conducted in collaboration with and funded by industry. Recent and current projects include:

  • Clean coal technology and processing
  • Coal/gas outbursts prevention
  • Crown pillar stability monitoring and analysis
  • Geostatistical reservoir analysis
  • Geohazards monitoring and prevention
  • In situ reservoir characterization and monitoring
  • Innovative treatment of solid and liquid wastes
  • Internet based mine information and data management system
  • Innovative disposal/utilization of mine tailings and drill cuttings
  • Mine backfill optimisations
  • Non-destructive evaluation of rock bolts and concrete structures
  • Ocean mining
  • Ore-body modeling and reserve estimation
  • Coal bed methane
  • Initial CO2 storage
