Biography

I began my university education in a Liberal Studies program and then came Dal to do my MA (Aristophanes’ Thesmophoriazusae) and my PhD (Sophocles’ Electra). Before taking up an appointment at Dalhousie, I taught at Brock University and the University of Windsor.

Research and teaching interests

My research interests range from Homer to Euripides to the reception of Greek tragedy in film. My publications include a book on Sophocles’ Electra as well as articles on Greek tragedy. I am particularly interested in the ethical nature of Greek tragedy, the relationship between narrative and drama, as well as the cinematic reception of antiquity. My current research project is a study of the adaptation of Euripides’ Medea by Carl Theodor-Dreyer and Lars von Trier.

I regularly teach undergraduate courses in Greek language and literature in translation as well as graduate courses on Homer and Greek tragedy. I have also taught courses on the ancient world on film.
