The purpose of theÌýAcademic Recruitment and Selection GuidelinesÌýis to assist units in the search process for new faculty members and other academic staff. The guidelines provide direction through each of the essential steps in the recruitment process. They also facilitate consistent practices within the university by ensuring that all academic units adhere to the same procedures outlined here. The guidelines are designed to provide a fair, equitable, consistent, documented and defensible system for hiring academics and to ensure that legal, human and individual rights are respected.

These guidelines should also assist units in their efforts to attract and retain members of designated groups that will further the university's goal of producing a diverse faculty. We ask the cooperation of those responsible for search processes in following not only the letter, but also the spirit, of theÌýEmployment Equity Through Affirmative Action Policy. The policy applies to all academic appointments, including the professionals, librarians, instructors, and counsellors. Every vacancy should be considered an opportunity to achieve employment equity goals.

We hope that these processes will enable units to attract, hire and retain an academic workforce that encompasses diversity and excellence.
