Types of Research

The Pool Tank is suitable for a large range of research projects. Here are just a few examples of how the pool has been used:

Seal Colony: The Pool Tank was the primary research holding area for several species of seals for almost 9 years.

Cod Spawning Habitat: From 2000 to 2003, the Pool Tank was used as a spawning habitat for large Atlantic Cod (Gadus morhua). Due to its large size, the tank has been able to provide a larger water volume than other smaller tanks could, thereby creating a more “natural spawning environment”.

Rocky Shore Habitat: The Pool Tank has been used in many unique ways including building a rocky shore habitat to test the efficiency of traps used in the local lobster fishery.

Squid Habitat: In the mid 1970s, two species of squid, Illex illecebrosus and Loligo pealei, were kept in the Pool Tank. One of these species, I. Illecebrosus, was kept for long periods of time including successful spawning.
