Working On Campus


What is considered "on-campus" work?

On-campus employment is defined as employment within the boundaries of the campus or in facilities owned, leased, or rented by Dalhousie. For example, your employer may be the University, a student organization, or a private contractor operating within the boundaries of the campus, such as a business in the Student Union Building or the library. On-campus employment includes work at facilities such as teaching hospitals, clinics, and research institutes, which may be located off campus but have a formal association or affiliation with Dalhousie, and which are located within the City of Halifax. This includes Dalhousie’s Sexton Campus or Agriculture Campus.

Are you eligible to work on campus?

You can work on campus without a Work Permit if you meet the following requirements:

  • You have a valid study permit or you have applied to extend your study permit and have maintained status.
  • Your study permit states that you are authorized work on campus (e.g. “may accept employment” or “may work”). If your study permit does not authorize you to work, you must apply toamend your study permit (refer to “Amending your Study Permit” section on the Working in Canada page).
  • You are registered as a full-timestudent for immigration purposes.
  • You have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN).

How manyhours can you work on campus per week?

IRCC does not limit the number of hours students are permitted to work on campus. However, some ϳԹemployers may restrict the hours students can work. It is generally recommended to work no more than 10-15 hours per week to avoid impacting your studies.
