Position: 1 Research Assistant, Part-time Casual
Department / Unit: Environmental Science, Faculty of Science
Location: Studley Campus (work is primarily computer based; any location)
Application Deadline: Oct 15th 2018
Rate of Pay: $16-21/hr commensurate with experience
Period of Employment: Nov 2018-Apr 2019 (some flexibility)4.5 - 6 hours/week between Nov-April
Position Description: ENVS 3100 Field Methods in Environmental Science is a new course being offered in the Winter 2019 term with a focus on data management, analytics, and visualization of environmental information. The Research Assistant will assist the Instructor Dr. Amy Mui on development of course-related materials. Seeking candidates who have an interest in curriculum development, good data science, and are proficient with MS Excel, R, and ArcGIS.,
Key Responsibilities:
• Sourcing real-world environmental datasets
• Liaising with the GIS Centre
• Testing and developing numerical and coding-based problem sets with the Instructor’s guidance
• Writing formal instructions based on problem sets
• Testing activities with students in class, and soliciting for feedback
Hours are generally flexible though deadlines are firm, and the work can be completed remotely (i.e., computer-based tasks). The candidate would gain experience with curriculum development in the field of environmental science and active learning, contribute directly to the success of the course, and promote a positive learning experience for students.
Qualifications
• A senior undergraduate, graduate student or recent graduate, preferably with a science background and experience in data analysis, coding, and/or GIS.
• Strong organizational and written communication skills
• Strong time management skills
• Able to work independently
