Women’s Basketball

The ladies were slated for two games this week and were unable to come away with a win against the Saint Mary’s Huskies or the Acadia Axewomen. Dalhousie, now 3-3, falls to fourth place in the AUS standings.

On Wednesday night, the Tigers travelled down South Street to the Homburg Centre to take on the fifth-ranked team in the nation, the Saint Mary’s Huskies.

After a promising 16-10 first quarter for the Tigers, Saint Mary’s took control of the game holding the Tigers to just two points in the second quarter. SMU was up 28-18 at half time.

Saint Mary’s did not let up in the third quarter putting up 24 points compared to the Tigers 10.  The Huskies went on to grab a 61-38 victory.

Tessa Stammberger was once again the Tigers best player on the floor but was held to only 13 points, a team high.

On Saturday it was a much closer affair as the ladies suffered a one-point loss to the undefeated Acadia Axewomen on the road. The young Tigers are continuing to exceed expectation this season and have shown they shouldn’t be taken lightly.

After trailing 39-28, the Tigers had a huge third quarter cutting the deficit to one point heading into the fourth quarter.

The Tigers managed to claim the lead in the late stages of the fourth quarter but could not outlast the Axewomen suffering a 67-66 loss.

It was none other than Tessa Stammberger leading the charge with 23 points.

Dalhousie’s next action comes on the road when they take on the StFX X-Women next Saturday.

Men’s Basketball

After starting the season 4-0, the men’s basketball team has run into some trouble dropping both their contests this week to the Saint Mary’s Huskies and the Acadia Axemen. Despite the two losses, the Tigers still sit in a tie for second in the AUS standings.

On Wednesday night, the boys took on Halifax rivals, the Saint Mary’s Huskies at the Homburg Centre. Saint Mary’s had a strong second half propelling them to a 77-58 win, handing the Tigers their first loss of the season.

The Tigers couldn’t seem to get it going offensively as Kashrell Lawrence was the only ºÚÁϳԹÏÍøplayer to reach double digits in scoring with 16 points.

On Saturday night in Wolfville, it was a much more competitive game as the Axemen and Tigers were neck-and-neck the whole match. Acadia managed to edge out the Tigers taking the contest 85-83.

After suffering their first loss of the season the Tigers came out strong posting a 21-16 first quarter. Acadia came back in the second quarter knotting things up at 42-42 heading into the break.

By the fourth quarter, the Axemen had opened up at 12-point lead and looked to be in control of the game. ºÚÁϳԹÏÍøonce again managed to comeback going on a 12-0 run in the late stages of the game to tie things up at 83 with six seconds remaining.

Shaquille Smith scored in the dying seconds on the fast break to give the Axemen the win.

Lawrence had another double-double with 25 points and 10 boards.

The Tigers will try to get back in the win column next Saturday when they take on the StFX X-Men in Antigonish.

Men’s Hockey

The men’s hockey team took the ice at the Halifax Forum twice this weekend, coming away with a win and a loss. The Tigers still sit in seventh place in the AUS but are closing in on the sixth place UPEI Panthers.

That evening the Tigers lost a five-set thriller to the Sherbrooke Vert et Or in a match where the Tigers seemed to lay off when they had substantial leads.

Anna Dunn-Suen was the Tigers best player recording 30 kills in the two contests.

Saturday was a different story for ºÚÁϳԹÏÍøwho beat two quality opponents in the Laval Rouge et Or and the Montreal Carabins.
