The winding down of a long, successful 窪蹋勛圖厙career is an opportunity for reflection, celebration and good cheer.

All were in abundance at this years Retirees Tea, which took place last Thursday, June 12 at the Presidents House. The annual event recognizes faculty and staff who have retired from the university within the past year.

The reception had many delicious treats, coffee and tea to accompany the reminiscing. President Richard Florizone congratulated the retirees on heading into the next chapter of their lives and thanked them for their years of dedication to Dalhousie.

Most of you are moving into a new phase of your life, and some of you have already made the transition, he said. Its an exciting time, a time to embrace more fully your passions outside of Dal and to cultivate new interests including spending more time with family, with friends, and especially on yourselves.

Looking back at Dals growth and change over the past few decades, Dr. Florizone noted the important role the attendees played: making our impact more strongly felt through the students we have graduated, the discoveries we have made, the artistic and scholarly work that we have produced, and the programs we have delivered.

There was a common theme amongst the retirees of what theyll miss the most about their time at Dal: the students.

Linda Cochrane spent nine years as a full time instructor in the Department of Dental Clinical Sciences and also worked for several years part-time. Only two weeks into her retirement, her fondest memories came from seeing her students progress through their studies.

The class size made it so that I got to know them beyond being their instructor, she said. Im sad that I will not get to see the students who I recently had the pleasure of teaching finish.

Cindy Townsend spent almost 30 years at Dal before retiring from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and before that she was a student herself.

I was a student here, I met my husband here and our children were students here, she says. You can say that were a family the bleeds black and gold.

Since retiring almost a year ago, Cindy has found that what she misses most are the students who came through the lab. They kept me young.
