Tigers Weekend Recap (Nov. 9‑11)

Women’s Soccer
DAL 0 vs. Queen’s 2; DAL 1 vs. CBU 0; DAL 1 vs. Sherbrooke 0

Last week women’s soccer travelled to Victoria, B.C. for the CIS championship, where they faced the Queen’s Gaels in the first round. Despite matching the two-time defending champions in shots and possession, Dal was unable to capitalize and fell 2-0. Determined to win their first consolation game the following day, the Tigers beat the Capers in a rematch of the AUS final with Kristy McGregor-Bales scoring to advance the team to play for fifth place. The black and gold took on Sherbrooke Saturday afternoon in a close match that was decided in the last five minutes with a goal by Bianca Jakisa. Congratulations to the team on an amazing season and their fifth-place finish at the CIS championship!

Cross Country
CIS Championship

London, Ont. played host to the 2012 CIS championship. Dal’s women’s team came eighth overall with top Tigers finishers Holly Van Gestel (21st), Ellen Chappell (34th) and Emily Clarke (56th) far apart in the standings, but only seconds in time. On the men’s side, Matt McNeil (66th) and Bruce Russell (67th) were the only Dal competitors.  

Men’s Hockey
SMU 7 @ DAL 4, DAL 4 @ StFX 5

Wednesday night’s game against the Huskies was a tough test for the Tigers. With SMU taking the lead early on, Dal was forced to play catch up throughout the game. Despite a rough first two periods, the third belonged to the black and gold with the Tigers scoring three goals to help close the gap. On Friday Dal faced StFX in a heated match that saw both teams finish regulation play tied 4-4. In overtime the X-Men found the back of the net first.

Women’s Hockey
DAL 2 @ UdeM 5, DAL 1 @ STU 7

On the road in New Brunswick, the women’s hockey team came up short in two tough matches. Saturday evening the women played hard to challenge the Aigles Bleues with two goals by Elena Tsitouras, but they were unable to catch UdeM in the third period. The Tommies proved to be tough competitors in Sunday’s game after they applied pressure in the second to take a commanding lead.

Men’s Volleyball
UNB 1 @ DAL 3; UNB 3 @ DAL 0

On Friday night Dal hosted UNB in the first of two games that had the bleachers at Dalplex packed full. Alex Dempsey, Bryan Duquette and Connor Maessen lit up the court for a Tigers win. Saturday’s rematch however did not favor Dal and UNB swept the black and gold.

Women’s Volleyball
UNB 1 @ DAL 3

UNB faced a tough Tigers team at Dalplex on Saturday afternoon, falling after four sets. Dal out-played the Varsity Reds with Louise Facca and Maggie Li leading the team with 21 and 17 points respectively.

Men’s Basketball
DAL 81 @ UPEI 99; DAL 82 @ UPEI 89

The Tigers visited UPEI for their season opener on Friday against the Panthers followed by a rematch on Saturday. Both games were hard fought and Dal forced a tight second game but could not maintain their lead.

Women’s Basketball
DAL 72 @ UPEI 64; DAL 73 @ UPEI 67

Over the weekend UPEI hosted Dal in a two-game series and the Tigers came out on top with back-to-back wins over the Panthers. Fourth-year guard Keisha Brown scored 18 points during each game leading both teams in points. Brown was named Subway Player of the Game on Friday while Tessa Stammburger received the honours on Saturday with 16 points and nine rebounds.
