A little wake‑up music

- August 25, 2010

“Good morning Discovery!”

NASA is asking for help in choosing wake-up songs to be played for its astronauts during the final space shuttle missions. Some ideas include such spacey selections as Train’s Drops of Jupiter, Stevie Wonder’s Higher Ground and Steppenwolf’s Magic Carpet Ride. (So far, Rush's Countdown and the Star Trek theme are neck-and-neck as the favorites in an online vote.)

According to NASA's History Division, the tradition of Mission Control playing wake-up songs goes back to Apollo program. The Apollo 15 crew aboard the spacecraft America was serenaded with The City of New Orleans, which opens "Good morning America how are you?"

Let’s help them out shall we? What’s your suggestion of a song to get the shuttle crews up and at ‘em?
