Rethinking who we honour

- August 18, 2008

A commanding statue of Edward Cornwallis can be found in Cornwallis Park, on the corner of Barrington and South Streets.

Edward Cornwallis is the founder of Halifax and a former governor of Nova Scotia. He is recognized in the name of a junior high school, a street, and a downtown park.

But now there's pressure to have the name of the park changed and the statue taken down. Teacher Cheryl LeBlanc-Weldon reminds that Cornwallis was behind a 1749 proclamation that called for the scalps of all Mi'kmaq men, women and children.

What do you think? Should the statue of Edward Cornwallis be removed and the name of Cornwallis Park changed?
