As a long-serving ϳԹemployee, Karen Mann returned to the President’s House for afternoon tea—retracing a journey she took 50 years ago as a 15-year-old student just beginning university.
“It was all very nice. I remember being very nervous,” recalled Dr. Mann originally from Windsor, N.S. “We were all sitting on chairs and on the floor. The president had all the freshmen over for tea; compared to today, there weren’t that many of us.”
Having just received her 25-year pin from ϳԹPresident Tom Traves, Dr. Mann reflected on a long association with Dalhousie, where she got her three degrees and has been employed on and off (to raise her children) since 1967. A professor in the Division of Medical Education at ϳԹMedical School, she is retiring at the end of the month.

“Coming in here today and thinking about retirement, it feels like a lovely circle,” says Dr. Mann, who mingled with other long-serving employees at the tea last Friday. “I still feel very enthusiastic about ϳԹand I love the work, but I feel ready for a transition.”
Other ϳԹemployees who nibbled Florentines and sipped tea at the president’s gracious home included:
