ItÕs all about balance for Selena Allen. Selena decided to pursue a different career path, which led her to Dalhousie. Going back to school, working as a dental technician and managing a young family wasnÕt easy, but she more than met the challenge.
Born in Saint John, Selena completed the Transition Year Program (TYP) and received the Morris Saffron Prize for highest academic standing.
Returning to school took some creative time management for the busy mom. Ã’As soon as I found a spare hour, I would find a quiet spot somewhere and do whatever work I could in that time. In the evenings when the kids were in bed, I did homework. And thatÕs how I did it the whole year.â€
Now that hard work has paid off with a new-found confidence, and a new direction for her career.
Ã’When a friend first told me about the TYP program, I thought, well if I donÕt try IÕll never know. And now, IÕve discovered some new strengths, and I have more confidence in myself.â€
Selena plans to pursue a career in nursing. Selena shares the Morris Saffron Prize with other winners Amanda Skeir and Rufina Faeni.
