Rosalie Starzomski
BN (1978)
Dr. Rosalie Starzomski completed her MN at the University of Calgary and a PhD at the University of British Columbia. She is currently a Professor at the University of Victoria, School of Nursing.
Dr. Starzomski鈥檚 background includes over 30 years as a nephrology/transplant advanced practice nurse and over 25 years as a clinical ethicist and member and chair of several clinical ethics committees.
Focus on health care
Her research, practice, teaching and publications are focused on health care and nursing ethics, organ donation, transplantation, nephrology, end of life care, influencing change in the health care system and health care decision-making.
Teacher, consultant and editor
She teaches courses related to ethics, health policy and influencing change to nursing, medical and health care professional students and consults on ethics and health policy for a number of health care agencies. She is a co-editor of the book: 鈥淭oward a Moral Horizon: Nursing Ethics for Leadership and Practice鈥�.
Active volunteer and leader in community
Dr. Starzomski has been actively involved in the community and has taken on volunteer leadership roles for many organizations including the Kidney Foundation of Canada, Canuck Place, Vancouver/Richmond Health Board, British Columbia Ministry of Health, the Canadian Nurses Association, Health Canada, the World Council for Renal Care, and the Canadian Council for Donation and Transplantation (CCDT).
Committee appointments
She was a member of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Standing Committee on Ethics and she chaired the Diverse Communities Initiative and the National Organ Donation Collaborative for CCDT. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Organ Replacement Registry, the BC Provincial Forum for Clinical Ethics Support and Coordination and the planning committee for the 2014 Canadian Bioethics Society Conference.
Award recipient
She has been the recipient of numerous awards including an Award of Excellence for Nursing and an Award of Excellence for Nursing Practice from the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia, the Queen Elizabeth 11 Golden Jubilee Medal for outstanding and exemplary achievement and service to the community and to Canada and the University of Victoria School of Nursing Award of Excellence for Nursing Education.
