Michael J. Ryan

Michael J. Ryan made a lifetime commitment to public service. Born in the community of Calvert in 1929, he completed Grade XII at St. Bonaventure's College in St. John's. Additional training was acquired while working, including a Diploma in Public Administration which he completed at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1971.

Employed with the United States Air Force in the early 50's at Fort Pepperrell and Goose Bay, he joined the provincial government in 1956 and worked in the payroll division. He transferred to the Central Swine Breeding Station in 1965 when government set up its own Swine Breeding program. He was promoted to Manager in 1971 and continued in that role for seven years.

He was promoted to the position of Regional Agriculture Supervisor for Eastern Newfoundland in 1978, and to the position of Assistant Deputy Minister (Agriculture) in 1984, a position he held until retirement in 1989.

Mike Ryan was a very strong supporter of the agricultural industry and particularly encouraged the formation of local and provincial farm organizations.

He was highly regarded by producers and industry, and will always be remembered for his direct approach to dealing with problems.

Mr. Ryan and his wife, the former Hannah Farrell had two children. Nominated by the Avalon Farm Women's Association and the Newfoundland Federation of Agriculture, The Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame is pleased to recognize the contributions of Michael J. Ryan.
