Dr. Marion Brown

Dr. Marion Brown

School of Social Work, Faculty of Health

Marion is a social worker/educator with over 20 years’ experience in facilitating meaningful conversations in community and university settings. Marion began teaching at the School of Social Work in 2002 and in 2020 was appointed Associate Dean Academic in the Faculty of Health.

Marion has taught in the undergraduate and graduate social work programs, on campus and online. Grounded in relational processes, she uses critical pedagogies, weaving analyses of power and advocacy into politicized teaching & learning processes. In 2019 she was awarded the Canadian Association of Social Work Distinguished Service Award. Her areas of research and writing include projects focussed on universal design for learning, culturally responsive pedagogies, trauma informed learning environments, interprofessional education and practice, and health equity.

As Associate Dean Academic in the Faculty of Health she is responsible for strategic leadership in program & curriculum development, implementation, evaluation, & continuous improvement for academic & scholarly innovation.

2023

Dr. Sachin Seth, Associate Dean, Academic Affairs, Faculty of Dentistry, is being honoured as an outstanding teacher and mentor with the ϳԹAlumni Association Faculty Award of Excellence for Teaching. His helpful, open, and supportive way of dealing with students and colleagues exemplify the criteria for this award. Dr. Seth has taught across all years of the dentistry curriculum, and he is a favourite amongst the students. Dr. Seth’s publications help pass on his expertise to colleagues and his YouTube videos of introductory operative dentistry techniques are a valuable resource to both ϳԹand non-ϳԹstudents alike. His innovative small group practice model, which brought a diverse group of teachers and students together, has greatly impacted the education and the educational experience.

Biography

Sachin Seth, DDS, MEd is an assistant professor and associate dean of academics at ϳԹ in Halifax. He completed his BSc and DDS degrees at ϳԹ in 1996 and 2000 respectively and then obtained his MEd from Acadia University in 2011, with a focus on curriculum development.

Since 2002, Sachin has been involved with both clinical and didactic teaching at ϳԹ, including operative dentistry, evidence-based dentistry, patient care, and communications.  In 2018, he led various stakeholders to deliver an innovative new clinical teaching program that exposes students to a setting which more closely resembles private practice, with collaboration between dentistry and dental hygiene.

Sachin has worked extensively with the National Dental Examining Board of Canada and been involved with standard setting, exam review, and question writing for licensure exams for dentists in Canada.

He was recently inducted as a Fellow into the American College of Dentists. Sachin has also received several teaching awards, including the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry W.W. Wood Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2019 and the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry National Teaching Award in 2022.

2021

Dr. Catherine Craig, (Professor; Simulation Coordinator - Obstetrics) Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Faculty of Medicine

Dr. Catherine Craig has been selected as the 2021 recipient of the ϳԹAlumni Association Award of Excellence for Teaching. Dr. Craig, professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, has worked in the department for the past 27 years. She is being recognized for her excellence as an educator, mentor, advocate, and innovator. 

Dr. Craig has developed an innovative, evidence-based simulation program for undergraduate and postgraduate students that prepares them for high acuity, low frequency, and challenging clinical situations in obstetrics. Dr. Craig’s students describe the learning environment she creates as positive, safe, and supportive, which enables learning to be optimized and confidence to be nurtured. Her impact in the area of simulation has also been noted nationally and internationally. She has been a leader in the development of a national simulation program for Obstetrics and Gynaecology residency training programs and has also assisted in incorporating simulation as an integral part of the Competence By Design (CBD) curriculum through her work on the Royal College CBD Committee. At an international level, she has been instrumental in teaching at Train the Trainer simulation workshops in Rwanda and lecturing at the Songea University College School of Medicine in Tanzania. She has also collaborated with Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana in the development of an obstetrics simulation program for their residents. Further, Dr. Craig has made seminal contributions to the literature, often supervising resident trainees, with her main focus being in the area of simulation in medical education.

Dr. Craig is also committed to the wellbeing and resilience of the members of her department. She has made an impact through her leadership in the development of a departmental Wellness and Safety Committee that has undertaken many initiatives to enhance wellbeing in the workplace. She has additionally spearheaded the design and implementation of a wellness curriculum for residents in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. She is described by her nominators as having an emotional intelligence that enables her to be immensely effective as a mentor and as an advocate. Her longstanding commitment to education, mentorship, advocacy, and innovation has been invaluable to learners and her colleagues in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

2019

Matthew Schnurr, International Development Studies

Dr. Schnurr, associate professor in the Department of International Development studies, is this year’s recipient of Dal’s top institutional award for teaching. The honour recognizes the interdisciplinary reach of Dr. Schnurr’s educational leadership in simulation-based learning. Through the establishment of an Atlantic Canada community of practice, facilitated by the frequently accessed Simulations and Student Learning Website, he has created an online hub for faculty, educational developers and graduate students. He also improved teaching through spearheading the creation of Dalhousie’s guidelines on research related to the scholarship of teaching and learning, an initiative aligned with his own evidence-based assessment of the impact of his teaching and learning initiatives.

Dr. Vivian Howard, School of Information Management

Vivian Howard, this year's recipient of the university's top teaching award, first joined Dal in a full-time role in 1999 as one of the original instructors in the then newly launched Bachelor of Management program. Since then, she has built a reputation as an outstanding teacher and community leader. An associate professor in the School of Information Management, Dr. Howard is being recognized for her scholarly contributions on teaching and learning and for her commitment to community engagement and helping boost retention efforts for international students. She has also provided consistent support for peers across faculties on major initiatives such as the development of the Indigenous Studies minor, which launched in the fall of 2015.

Anne Marie Ryan, Department of Earth Sciences

This year’s top award for teaching is being presented to Anne Marie Ryan. Dr. Ryan has been with ϳԹsince 2001. She is being recognized for her leadership in developing programs for early career faculty within the Faculty of Science and the expansion to a “Community of Teaching Practice, Faculty of Science,” as well as her her scholarly contributions to pedagogic research. One student noted that, “Anne Marie is a great prof whose dedication and love for geology is evident through her teaching styles and enthusiasm.”
