On October 26, Dr. Linda Blakey (DDS’89) will be presented with an Outstanding Alumni Award (OAA) for her many contributions to her profession and her community in Newfoundland. She will also be celebrating her 35th anniversary with her classmates. Here, she answers a few questions about her work and gives her thoughts on receiving an OAA.

What are you looking forward to doing/who are you looking forward to seeing at DentDays 2024 and why?

I’m looking forward to seeing classmates (it is our 35-year reunion!) And faculty members who I might still know!

What is your best/funniest memory from your time in the Faculty of Dentistry as a student?

I have so many memories as a student. Reminiscing is always the best! One of the funniest stories was when a classmate let a denture patient leave after using orange solvent when doing a denture fitting. The patient went out for a cigarette and his beard burned!

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

I sound like a nerd, but I LOVE my job! I love communicating/chatting with patients who are like family to me now. I love going to work pretty much every day!

What does receiving an OAA from the Faculty of Dentistry mean to you?

The OAA is so very special to me. It is wonderful to be recognized for the things I have done over the years that weren't a burden to me but things I enjoying doing and for everything I have done for the profession in my own small way!
